[[ instinct produces emotions without explanation and gives us quick and strong desire to act. instincts are animals heritage and still strong in human behaviour. they are ancient and didn't know about complicated modern world. so, mostly they are useful, but some of them can be devastating for modern society (i.e. uncontroled desire to harm other people, steal something to make profit and so on).
intellect is quite new system in organism, so it acts not so fast and strong, but can account complicity of modern world and make better decisions, despite emotions may drive to act differently (and perhaps resulting in loss). ability to put intellect above emotion allowed us to build civilization, and make civilization winner over other less intellect-controlled civilizations.
"you can't be the master of your emotions, but you can be master of your actions" (maria d'arconville)
this is the short summary about very interesting Anatoly Protopopov's research on human ethology, details are available here:
- The treatise of love, as it is recognized by awful bore (http://www.oocities.org/protopop_1999/treatise.html)
- FAQ on human ethology (http://mirage.theunixplace.com/mirage/misc/faq_tre.html)
it is not just interesting reading, but a guide how to make success in life, how to communicate with other people (especially the opposite sex), and how to make civilization progress. ]]
